Artist's Statement

I find landscape and nature photography a welcome recess from living in our fast-paced, cell-phone-at-the-ear culture. Even taking just a few minutes to enjoy a sunrise or to admire a blanket of fog creeping across a field can help renew my spirit. The landscapes that I photograph are an attempt to capture and to share that spirit of renewal.

When setting out to photograph landscapes, it’s important for me to first try and relate to a scene personally. Does the place where I’m trying to photograph have a sense of spirit? If it does, then the challenge is to select the correct combination of camera format, lens, and film that best convey my feeling for that place.

So, in a sense, these photographs are more about the spirit of the landscape rather than the landscape itself.
